tv President Trump Meets with Hispanic Pastors CSPAN January 25, 2019 7:48pm-8:03pm EST
2.6% in the gerry connolly-steny hoyer bill. the trump administration is putting a temporary pay raise freeze into effect, and is only proposing a 1.9% increase. that could get rolled into this homeland security agreement as well. host: erik wasson covers congress for bloomberg. you can follow his reporting on bloomberg and twitter. thanks, as always, for joining us. erik: thank you so much. >> following is a speech announcing a deal to end the partial government shutdown, president trump met with a group of hispanic pastors in the rose room of the white house. this is about 15 minutes. president trump: can you come over here? it is much easier. there is a lot of room over here. you are all looking at the door so you can be the first ones out. >> [laughter] president trump: come on, bring
the camera over here. there is room. [chatter] president trump: thank you very much. we have some of the most respected and powerful, frankly -- they have tremendous contributions of ministers -- anywhere in this country. they have been talking to me for a long period of time. we went up 19% with the hispanic population. part of it because we are doing record-setting jobs right now, but part of it is what we talk about, the wall and security. these are tremendous people, many have been my friends for a long period of time. i thought we would go around the table and say a few words. >> mr. president, thank you for
having us here today. i have a letter to present to you from 150 hispanic evangelical leaders, simply saying an expression of gratitude for your good faith efforts to work with democrats and try to get everyone to the table to get things moving again . you have done a very good job in being the leader we need you to be and extending a hand to come to the table. we want to say thank you for doing that. we want to say thank you for doing everything you can to get aid in a humanitarian way for this crisis where it is needed most, securing our borders and providing for law enforcement and border patrol everything they need, all the tools and resources that are needed. one thing you have not done, mr. president, is manufacture a humanitarian crisis. it is real, and although many
people began to declare repeatedly this is a manufactured crisis, being a pastor from texas, i can tell you the human suffering that has been going on for many decades has hit a fever pitch, and i am grateful you have shown leadership to call it out and do something about it. thank you. backpapresident trump: thank yoy much. only -- inastor not the latino community. i week ago, her debriefing where -- a week ago, i heard a briefing where you were talking about the humanitarian crisis. as i listened to you share that, i pulled over to the side and started praying. do the american people hear the statistics the president is saying?
do the american people know what our reality is? in that moment, i felt like i had a truth encounter and i started praying to let america have this truth encounter. i am an immigrant from mexico and daughter of an immigrant from mexico. i want you to know you have not only my support, but the support of our community. yes, there are things we need to resolve. i feel like you are doing an amazing job resolving not only the need for security, this crisis that has been going on for many years with the security of our nation and immigration issues that have been going on for so many years. i want you to know we have -- you have our support. president trump: we will get it gone. >> we are here to support you, mr. president. there are misconceptions in the public thinking that the spanish
community is for illegal immigration. there is a misconception also that we want open borders, and dealing with people every single day, i see that our community supports what you are doing. we don't want open borders. i have been to 70 countries preaching the gospel, and every country has laws. america has been so gracious, opened the doors for every person that comes. that misconception that spanish people want open borders, that want no laws, that is not true. what you are doing is great. the lowest unemployment for spanish people, 4%, that's impressive. and that is what you have seen increased in your support, support of spanish people to you. we pray for you and we want you
to know you come with our support. president trump: i appreciate it. thank you. >> president trump, thank you for what you are doing from america. i support totally what you are doing for america, for turning the crisis at the border -- i am involved in human trafficking and gang violence in las vegas. we know there is a crisis. we support all that you are doing. president trump: the gangs come from south of the border? all of them? >> most of them that come to las vegas are trying to work something out and can't get it going, so they start to join the gangs. we work alongside the police department. we have churches connected to the police department in different areas of the city. when there is crime or violence, we go out with them. we hit the ground with the
police department and restore order into areas. president trump: great job you do, fantastic job. >> i am the first lady president of the hispanic pastors association in south florida. i want to tell you that we pray for you, we are behind you, we want safe borders and we are willing to stick with you for immigration reform. president trump: thank you. pence: it is an honor to welcome these wonderful hispanic pastors here. we are grateful for your history. we are grateful for your prayers and support you have shown to the president. record unemployment for hispanic americans, african-americans across the country. the leadership you have means ad support for great deal to all of us. thank you all. president trump: a big part of
it is the economy is so strong. people are rushing our borders. >> you are commander in chief, and part of these issues is safety of our country. the country changed after 9/11 and we are dealing with issues we perhaps did not have to deal with in the past. deal with pastor, i the victims of human trafficking, which is at an all-time high. in a strong america when it comes to defending women and children, and even some men are trafficked as well, the horrific death and violence of thousands of people across our border is something no one has addressed. i am very grateful for this. i am grateful we are here at the table and that we have this dialogue and that you are open to it. i thank you for that . i know you have compassion for women, for children, for
families. for that i am very grateful. i am hopeful for the future, mr. president. president trump: secretary nielsen? secretary nielsen: i thank you all for your leadership in taking such good care of your communities and working with the department. we have continued to learn from you and understand what is happening within our communities so we can make them safer under the president's leadership. thank you for being here. president trump: she's got a very easy job. >> [laughter] president trump: reverend? >> thank you mr. president. texas, stor in waco, hispanic community. where i'm at, we suffer. we see what the people go through. open borders, we are for secure borders.
president trump: thank you. >> thank you very much. am in part of the latino coalition for israel. we are really amazed by your leadership. -- what president trump promises, president trump moving of from the the embassy in israel and now what you are doing with border security. wantan see that we do strong border security that you stand for. from the time we have had the honor to meet you, i know you have a compassion for the hispanic people. all of the times we have been able to be with you, and as evidenced by the historic unemployment rate, as evidenced by your willingness to help with you, we are with
praying for you. it is an honor to be with you. president trump: thank you very much. task is toident, my bring leadership to the nation, as we have worked with every organization sitting here today in leadership with the hispanics. one of the things i see today is there is a great misconception. media gives a major misconception of the hispanic community and the support we have for you. i can emphatically say your values are in line with the hispanic community. what you've seen in the polls is they have seen no matter what the media says, your actions speaks to their hearts desires. they have it all wrong. they are making my task more interesting. the message is getting to our hispanic communities, to truck drivers in los angeles -- you have hispanics who are truly
supporting. this reality we haves supportin. human trafficking is appalling. the catastrophes resell, we were never able to achieve what to have her do brought to the table and for that, the hispanic committee and america says thank you. president trump: thank you. i will say that we have done a lot of progress. when given the right ingredients, and we need that. we need the walls, really the technology, and you will see the numbers get even better. than numbers will get even better once we have the right things, including technology. but if we don't have the wall and the very powerful barrier, it is a waste of time. it can't work. thank you all very much, i appreciate it. [reporters asking questions] president trump: thank you very much. thank you very much.
i think we have a good chance. we will work with the democrats and if we can't do that, then obviously, we will do the emergency, because that is what it is. it is a national emergency. these are hispanic pastors, reverence, ministers and they understand better than anybody it is an emergency. it is a humanitarian emergency and we're going to take care of our border. it is going to be done. crime is going to go down throughout our whole country, not just the border. the border is the least of it. it is what the comes to the border that permeates through the whole country. drugs will drop way down because a big percentage comes to the border. you will see crime go way down. so we are going to do it and we are doing it well. i appreciate you being here. thank you. thank you all. thank you all.
